Audio Story

For this audio story assignment I decided to tell a story about a time in which I played in a basketball tournament. Talking about sports is personal to me because that was my childhood. This is one of my favorite stories from my past playing basketball and I hope others enjoy hearing it. This relates to my project because my project is about my journey to become an Athletic Director so I told a story about my athletic background. I drew my idea and design from listening to sports podcasts about athletes telling stories from their childhood. Specifically an interview with Johnny Manziel talking about the game in which his Texas A&M team upset #1 Alabama. I used audio of myself telling my story, and background audio of a crowd cheering that I pulled from creative commons free sounds. I thought that this would add a nice little touch to my project. I had issues at first downloading these sounds from the internet but I got it figured out. I imported my sounds into audition and cut parts of my story, and then edited my the crowd sounds into it and changed the volume on it. At first I had problems importing my audio but with a few tries, and a little extra research I figured it out. I also made it so that it would blend in and out softly with my audio using the techniques I learned on the tutorials. I think that on my final draft I will add in a few more sounds just to make it more enticing and interesting. I want to add a sound at the beginning similar to what we did in the vox pop tutorial. Overall I think that I have a great start that will make a great final with a few tweaks and added sounds.

  1. Hi Stockten! I enjoyed listening to your podcast, but have a couple suggestions. First, I thought in the beginning you could add a little song or intro that other sports podcasts do as well. This would make your story seem very professional and put together. This would also catch the listeners attention because it is not just your voice talking. Another critique I had was that your voice was a bit monotone. The story was super cool and exciting, but you didn’t seem excited while telling it. If you add more expression to your voice it will hype the story up and the listeners will be more intrigued. Something I really enjoyed was when you added in the cheering fans. It fit in perfectly with your story and was not too over powering. It added some spice to your story! I would also suggest adding some music or sounds at the end of your video as well to make the story go full circle. If your story starts and ends with a song or sound it will sound complete and tell the listener when the story ends and begins. Very good job!

  2. I like how you approached this audio story. This was something completely different from any other audio stories I’ve heard so far so how you’ve executed this was very creative. As a basketball player (even though I am not on the team) and a basketball lover myself, I really got lured into the story once you started talking about sports. How you added the crowd cheering in the background was the icing on the cake for me and I really felt like I was there when you described your 3v3 game. My only critique about this audio story is more of a suggestion than a critique. I suggest maybe adding more audio effects in the background for each part of the audio such as adding ball handling effects and even music. I believe these could very well improve your great audio story. I really hope this advise helps you make improvements on your final.

  3. After reading my group members feedback there are a few changes I want to make to my draft before turning in the final. First, I want to add music at the intro and outro, as this will make it sound more like a real sports podcast, and give the listeners something to listen to other than just my voice. I will search online to try and find some free music that I like. Secondly, I want to add in a few more small basketball sound effects. My group members liked the crowd cheering noise I had on the draft, so I think a few more minor noises would sound good. I want to re-record my story and try to be less monotone with it, this will add excitement for people listening to my story. Overall, I think that I am off to a good start. With a few little adjustments, I believe I will have a solid final.

  4. Hello Stockton, I love how you told a story about how your own experiences with basketball from a young age have impacted you. My favorite part is the addition of the cheering crowd sound effect when you were speaking about the end of the game. One this that could be improved upon with that though is that it did seem slightly choppy with the beginning and ending of it. Using the fade adjustment could help it to mesh better with the audio of you speaking. An addition that could be cool would be some sort of song/sound effect at the beginning and end of the entire piece to give it a more completed feel. The audio overall sounds a bit echo-y and this may be reduced by recording in a smaller space or a room with carpet/more furniture may help reduce that. Overall, I do like your story and how you executed it!
